Discovering the Margaret River Region

Margaret River region is a popular place to escape for the weekend. For those who know how large the state of Western Australia is, you’ll understanding that the 3 hour drop down south is a short trip! A weekend away in the region usually consist of good food and wine, and hiking or beaching. You really feel like you’ve left the hustle and bustle of the city behind.

We hopped into a car straight after work on Friday afternoon and made it into Margaret River town just in time for a quick dinner. After dinner we settled in for the night at a bed and breakfast 5 minutes away from the town centre.

Saturday was our only full day in the region. After a simple breakfast at home of yogurt, fruit and juice kindly provided by our host, we headed out to explore. We tried a selection of olive based produce at Vasse Virgin, checked out the coffee at Yahava Koffee Works and sampled some house chocolate at Temper Temper. We contemplated lunch at Watershed Premium Wines, but felt it was a little bit too early for lunch after a quick wine tasting. The winery and view was absolutely gorgeous though.

Instead we made our way to Voyager Estate to check out their beautiful herb and flower gardens. We were very lucky to have had perfect weather that weekend, blue skies and puffy clouds.

In the afternoon, we drove further south to Mammoth Caves, where ancient fossil remains of extinct megafauna were found. the audiotour gave us an interesting insight on these extinct giant animals and the science behind the formation of these amazing caves. After exiting the cave, there’s a short bush walk detour you can take (which we did) to make your way back to the carpark. By this time of the afternoon, we were starving! We drove back to town and grabbed a quick bite before heading home to rest.

Since we had a bit of time before the sun went down, we checked out Margaret River Distillery, the home of Giniversity and Limeburners. The dessert whiskey was an interesting one to try! Surfers Point in Prevelly is famous for it’s waves, beaches and sunset. In all the times I’ve been, I’ve seen people chilling on the grass as they waited for the sun to set. The Western Australian sunsets are always beautiful.

Last year when I came to Margaret River with my family we had dinner at Miki’s Open Kitchen, a lovely little Japanese restaurant in town and really enjoyed it. When we decided to spend a weekend in Margaret River this this, I didn’t hesitate to book dinner here again. This time I had the omakase menu. I really enjoy the sushi and seared vegies dish and the dessert! It was also really cool to sit around the open kitchen counter and watch the chefs prepare your dishes right in front of you.

On Sunday morning, we checked out of our bed and breakfast after breakfast, said goodbye to our host and headed out for the day. We stopped by my favourite winery, Howard Park and Madfish Wines before lunch. I love their Madfish Moscato. Wills Domain came highly recommended, so we decided to book in for lunch at this winery. It was another beautiful day down in Margaret River so it was the perfect weather to be sitting outside under the shade for lunch. We had a great view of vineyards in front of us. The food was pretty good too. The granita dessert was definitely my favourite.

After a satisfying lunch, we popped across the other side of the road to Gabriel Chocolate, taste tested some chocolate and bought several blocks of them. There are many more places to visit, explore and experience in the region, and there’s definitely something for everyone. The weekend away was refreshing, relaxing and delicious. It’s not often that I would write up such a long photo essay, but I thought this trip definitely warrants a good write up. Thanks for stopping by today.

J.
