Icelandic houses and Aurora Borealis at Stykkishólmur, Iceland

After a big day and a long drive, we arrived at our next accommodation, the charming town of Stykkisholmur . It was late afternoon by the time we arrived in town. We decided to take a walk through the quaint little town, towards the harbour and Súgandisey. Súgandisey is a basalt island next to the harbour that was recommended by our hotel staff. Climbing up the stairs, we got an amazing view of the town and the bay. The photo above is one of my favourites, I love the late afternoon sunset that coloured the sky.

The town was filled with brightly coloured houses from the late 19th century. I really enjoyed photographing the town as I walked through it.

It was also one of the rare nights where we were staying in a relatively populated town and since it was towards the end of the trip. We decided to treat ourselves to a local burger joint. After eating fairly simply and cheaply throughout the road trip, we enjoyed a hearty meal (albeit it was north of $30!).

After dinner, we headed back out to Súgandisey and was treated to an awesome night show. We were so fortunate to see the aurora borealis on our second last night in Iceland! We were still in town, there was a fair amount of light pollution, but we could still see the aurora borealis fairly clearly with the naked eye. We were out in the cold for a couple of hours before calling it a night and walking back to our accommodation.

Seeing the aurora Borealis multiple times throughout the trip was definitely one of my highlights of Iceland. It’s been a bucketlist item for a long time and I feel so grateful to be able to see it as mother nature can be temperamental. It’s also more magnificent in real life than I expected. If you have the good fortune to head to the northern countries, I highly recommend finding a way to see the lights. This brings me to the end of my Iceland photo essays. I really enjoy looking through my photo highlights and reliving some of the memories of the trip 12 months ago. The bunch of Fujifilm gear that I brought allow held up against the harsh weather and served me well throughout the 2 weeks in Iceland (Thanks Fujifilm Australia for the X-T2 loaner!).

Thanks for stopping by today.

Janice
