Shooting for Reflections – A Fuji X Aus Competition

Perth, City of Lights, after sunset

The last Fuji X Aus group competition challenge brief was reflections. We had 2 weeks to shoot and submit a photo. The grand prize was the NiSi Filters 100mm Starter Kit. An amazing prize to die for! I wasn’t a hundred percent happy with the shot I submitted, but given the time constraints I had and the stormy Perth weather, I really went out for a couple of hours one afternoon when the weather wasn’t too bad to do some creative shooting. Most of my favourite photos I shot from that session was shared on a previous blog post. However in this blog posts I wanted to share the shots that I tried to take that fit in with the “reflections” theme.

The photo above of is the photo I ended up submitting to the competition eventhough I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of stillness in the water to give me the “perfect” reflection shot. Still I really liked the shot which I submitted and titled “Perth Cityscape After Sunset”. What hooked me in was the trailing colours in the water which was the reflections of the lights off the buildings.

The photo below was an experimental shot where I was trying to get the reflection of Perth city in the aviator lens. Unfortunately Perth city just appeared too small in the photo. I think it would have worked better if I had some one wearing and posing for a shot. The challenge there would be make sure the reflection and not the person would be the subject.

Lastly the photo below is the classic reflection shot. I tried to make the shot interesting by making it symmetrical. While it’s probably not the worst shot in the world, it is a little bit dull other than the fact that it’s an almost perfect reflection of the building in South Perth. The shot was taken before sunset when there was a reasonable amount of light in the day.

Thanks for stopping by today.
