This blog post is a bit different to my previous ones. Like many people around the around, 2020 was a year of very little travel. We were fortunate in Western Australia to relatively low levels of COVID-19 cases and life for the second half of 2020 was relatively normal. We did a number of local WA trips and even did a staycation at COMO Treasury in Perth City as a special celebration. At the time it was a 2-night special deal offered by COMO Treasury which included daily breakfast, champagne, valet parking and a $100 voucher to use at one of the many restaurants in the building.

The latest square format instant film camera from Fujifilm called the Instax SQ1 was released in October 2020. This is the second instant camera I’ve used so far. The first was the Instax LiPlay. The Instax SQ1 is different to the LiPlay in that the SQ1 is a straight analogue instant camera and also shoots square format film rather than mini format film. I got to road test the camera during my trip down south to Pemberton and Margaret River as part of my collaboration with Instax Australia. The article is a now published on Instax Australia’s blog if you want to check it out.

Most ramen-lovers in Perth will likely be familiar with Dosukoi noodle shop located inside Fremantle markets. It’s been around since 2007 and it was probably one of the first few ramen shops in Perth before the ramen craze took off! It doesn’t seat many people however you won’t need to wait long for your ramen as the service is quick and people tend to be in and out of there quickly. They’re only open on Fridays to Sundays, so it’s definitely a weekend kind of activity.
A few weekends ago we were in Fremantle and decided to try it for ourselves. I love trying the “original” ramen when I’m trying a new joint for the first time. It was hearty and hot bowl of soup, very comforting for what was a chilly spring day.

Unboxing and Review of the Fujifilm Instax LiPlay Camera
In my view Fujifilm has dominated the instant film camera market. It’s great to see Polaroid making their own push into the market to drive up competition and innovation. I have always been fond of the idea of instant film but until recently have not owned an instant camera of my own. There is something alluring about instant film. For a digital photographer like myself, taking photos then bringing it into a whole workflow process that involves post-processing software such as Lightroom and then sharing onto platforms like your own blog, instagram or facebook, can sometimes feel like a lot of work. Shooting on a camera that produces instant film and have relatively have few controls to slow you down, you get to focus on light and composition when taking photos.
